On the way home from church a few Sundays ago, I had to stop for a red light coming down the hill on the way into Marble Falls. As I sat there waiting for the light to change, I paused for a moment to take in the beautiful view. It was so breathtaking that part of me yearned to linger there for a few more minutes, but all at once the light turned green.
As I descended down the hill and continued toward home, I marveled at the variety of scenery along the way. In a 20-minute drive, I encountered a beautiful lake surrounded by majestic hills, a bustling little town, a quarry off in the distance, blankets of wildflowers, and a serene little park road. Though this was not the first time I had followed this path, it was the first time I had really taken in my surroundings, and I was amazed by what I observed.
As I reflect back on that experience, the journey of motherhood is quite similar. For most, the moment that you see your newborn for the first time is a mountaintop moment that can never be rivaled. The view in that moment is exhilarating and without equal. However, where the path leads from there and what you will encounter along the way only God knows.
All of us who have traveled the highway called motherhood know that it is not for the faint of heart. At times it can feel more like a rollercoaster than a smooth superhighway. While it’s true that a good part of the journey is spent perched on the side of mountains watching our amazing little gifts from God grow and mature, it is also true that other parts are spent traversing deep, dangerous ravines or anxiously anticipating what lies around the next bend.
Though the journey might not always seem easy, the best part about it is that God chose our routes specifically and uniquely for us. Better yet, God does not expect, nor want, us to travel the road of motherhood alone. He has promised to never leave us nor forsake us (Joshua 1:5). More importantly, He has promised to help guide us along the way if we will only ask for His help.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your path straight. Proverbs 3:5-6
No matter where you are in the journey of motherhood today, I pray that you will stop for a minute and take in all of the sights and sounds right where you are. Celebrate the victories as well as the imperfections. Most of all thank God for the unique path He has charted for you and seek His guidance as you work to navigate through all of the twists and turns.
Remember that this road was never meant to be traveled alone and that the choices we make along the way have eternal consequences and will impact generations to come. We are simply sojourners trying to light the way for those who come after us.
The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower in the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children – with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts. Psalm 103:15-17
A Prayer for Mothers
Father in Heaven,
Thank you for the incredible gift of motherhood and all of the blessings that it brings. Thank you for all of the amazing women that have poured into us over the years and all of those that are walking along the path with us today. Thank you for the privilege of molding and shaping the next generation. Thank you most of all for entrusting us with the gift of life.
We ask that you guide us daily as we seek to be the mothers you have called us to be. Please remind us of the love, mercy, and grace that you have bestowed on us, and help us to extend those same gifts to our children. Help us to also raise up a well-disciplined generation who fear the Lord. Most of all, Father, help us to see the eternal value and importance of our calling as mothers.
