Family Scripture Reading: Esther 2:5-7, 2 Timothy 1:5, Titus 1:4
Summary: This week we continued our discussion on families and how a lot of our families don’t look like others. Some of us live in divorced homes, mixed homes, single parent homes, and adopted homes. And these might describe your home, and often we carry a guilt about what sin has done in our families that pulls us away from God, but we see in our second week of study over multiple individuals that God can work in any family dynamic. God doesn’t abandon families that don’t look exactly like scripture lines out, instead he redeems them by adding to our family from the outside so that way his people can continue to walk with Him. I encourage you this week to talk to your students about what their new family looks like.
Conversation Starters
These are questions to ask your teenager that are deeper than, “How was your Wednesday night?!” and them reply, “…good.”
- What do you think is your family?
- What do you go to in our family to learn about Jesus?
- What families of your friends do you look at to learn about Jesus?
- What adults are pouring into you that aren’t just mom and dad?
- How can we better pour into you who Jesus is and continue to help you walk with Him?
- Who in our family, and who of your friends, can you be pouring into?
- Who is our family pouring into?
Application
These are things you can do for the message to stick.
- Invite a family to dinner that looks different than you. Maybe they’re new to the church, new to the faith, or don’t know who Jesus is. Invite them to dinner with you so they can see what it looks like to be a family following Jesus. Invite them to worship with you for Easter so they can see what it is like to worship as a family. Your family, might be a part of the redemption of another family.
- Join a small group and bring your teenager to Sunday morning small groups. A community to learn in and invest in holds us accountable to be obedient. It’s very difficult to run from God and simultaneously be surrounded by His people.
